Cafundó is a beautiful farm located in Piatã, in Bahia’s Chapada Diamantina region. It is owned and run by husband-and-wife team Pedro Santana and Delzute Araujo Mesquita, who moved to the region in 1989. Before that, the pair were living in São Paulo, and Pedro was leading the demanding life of a city banker.

Pedro and Delzute moved to the Piatã area to pursue a slower, simpler existence, and planted coffee to take advantage of the region’s ideal growing conditions. They named the farm Cafundó (which translates to “very, very far away” in Portugese), because it is both physically and mentally far removed from the hustle and bustle of their old life.

“I wake up early and spend the whole day on the land [with] Delzute by my side,” Pedro told us. “I love the calm of the countryside. No amount of money could pay for what we have here.”
