Mitchell House, Melbourne CBD

Mitchell House has stood on the corner of Lonsdale and Elizabeth Streets since 1937, as one of the country’s best examples of the Art Deco/Streamline Moderne style.

Having long admired the building’s architecture and the sense of community fostered within, we were thrilled when a tiny shopfront became available at its entrance. We opened shop in December 2024 and were delighted to join the long-standing group of creative and commercial tenants who call Mitchell House home.

For the design, we partnered with Sarah Trotter of AOA Christopher Peck, who worked to celebrate the building’s signature curved forms and horizontal lines; staying true to its architectural significance, while giving the space new life.

Soft, buttery colours, curved forms, brass fixtures, and a feature light from Volker Haug & Flack Studio create a cosy, warm and luminous cafe space that glows when seen from the street. There is a small standing bar in the window for sipping a coffee and watching the world go by, and a public bench out the front for perching and enjoying a freshly brewed coffee.

We love how this little space functions as a respite from the busy city streets, with a radiance that complements the beautiful dark-green entrance tiles of Mitchell House itself.

Our Mitchell House shop is open 7 days a week. We offer a full range of filter and espresso drinks at this location, both hot and iced. We also retail freshly roasted coffee beans and Market Lane Tote Bags.
