Why we love it

“This book is about bringing to life a rarely seen side of rural African women. In most instances, they are portrayed as vulnerable. To us as their children, however, [they are] she-heroes and role models that are actively contributing to the wellbeing of families, communities, and nations” – Denyse K. Uwera

Strong Women Behind a Strong Coffee is a beautiful book created by Rwandan photographer and writer, Denyse K. Uwera. Deeply embedded in the lives of women coffee producers in Rwanda, Denyse wanted to upend stereotypes and let these incredible women tell their own stories, in their own words. The result is a stunning book of photo portraits and accompanying essays that gives the reader a greater understanding and appreciation of these women’s journeys and their joy, their challenges and perseverance, and their investment in coffee and the sense of community, stability and autonomy it brings.

100% of the profits from the sale of this book will be donated to ‘Supporting Strong Women’, a fundraising campaign for Rambagirakawa, a collective of women coffee producers in Northern Rwanda, (some of whom are featured in this book). The money raised will be used to build a child day-care centre – a long-held goal that will directly impact the women’s productivity and prosperity, while ensuring their children are cared for in a safe, happy and nurturing environment.
