How Do You Brew? with Ben & Kylie Shewry

How Do You Brew? with Ben & Kylie Shewry

What does your personal coffee ritual look like? And what does it mean to you? Market Lane’s How Do You Brew? series features brilliant, unique, passionate and innovative people from our wider community – including creatives, changemakers and hospitality heroes – generously giving us a glimpse of their own special coffee moments, and sharing the rituals and meaning behind them.

A meal at Melbourne/Naarm’s Attica is one of the most innovative, extraordinary and acclaimed eating experiences in the world. Chef and restauranteur Ben Shewry and his wife, Kylie, Attica’s General Manager, have been sharing Market Lane coffee with their guests for the last eight years. Our relationship with Ben, Kylie and their team goes well beyond a supply partnership, however; it’s a special and abiding friendship in which we share ideas, values and support, and we collaborate on panels and important fundraising events. (Attica also recently interviewed Market Lane co-founder, Fleur, as part of their Breaking Bread series.)

We so deeply admire and respect Ben and Kylie’s approach to running a small business with care and integrity, and the ways in which they use their business and their platform to work towards social change and inspire the hospitality industry to positively evolve.

We’ve wanted to interview Ben and Kylie for our How Do You Brew? series for a while now, and what better occasion than on the eve of the publication of Ben’s first book, Uses For Obsession – a profound, thought-provoking, generous, insightful and, at times, comical memoir about Ben’s years in hospitality and how he envisages the way forwards for our industry.

Kylie and Ben generously invited us into their beautiful mid-century modern home in Melbourne’s south-east, where, to the soundtrack of a Willie Nelson record, we drank a delicious coffee, patted their gorgeous cats, and chatted with the pair about their morning ritual, their perfect day off, how to cook a fantastic omelette, and the important role that coffee and music played in Ben’s book-writing process.
