Farmed by four consecutive generations of the Alburez-Ortega family, Finca La Merced is one of the most historic estates in Guatemala’s Chimaltenango department. It has been maintained by the family since 1832, when patriarch Francisco Albarez first purchased the estate at auction.
In 1912, Francisco’s visionary son Carlos Ortega Alburez introduced coffee farming, before going on to become the town’s mayor. With his wife, Balbina, Carlos built the first school in the region, after bringing electricity to the whole municipality of San Martín Jilotepeque. In 1996 the family’s fourth generation took over operations at the estate and established a wet mill, allowing them to process all of their coffee on site and opening up new job opportunities for the surrounding communities.
This coffee was naturally processed which delivers an amplified sweetness and abundant fruit flavours.
