In the mid-1800s, gold and diamonds were found in Brazil’s Espinhaço mountain range, leading many European fortune-hunters to settle in the region, which eventually became known as Chapada Diamantina. However, diamond mines had a devastating impact on the environment, and many of the local indigenous population were forced to work in punishing conditions.
While Chapada Diamantina has since been rejuvenated as a breathtaking national park, the legacy of its mines has not disappeared. After founding their family estate, Fazenda Progresso, here in the 1980s, the Borré family had a commitment to bring increased opportunity and prosperity to the region. Over the past three decades, they have provided thousands of jobs for the local community, established a medical clinic and school, and pioneered new crops like coffee and grapes. Airumá is named for the beautiful “starry sky” over Progresso, which promises a brighter future for the region and its people.
