Coffee production at Ndocha is a family affair. The small shamba (or “farm” in Swahili) is one of several plots that comprise a larger estate, which was first planted by Geoffrey Gachogo Karugondo’s grandparents in the 1960s, after Kenya gained independence from British rule. The estate was improved upon by his parents, who built a small wet mill on the property in the 1980s, and eventually passed it down to Geoffrey and his seven siblings, who split the land into separate shambas to grow coffee and raise livestock.
Today, Geoffrey, his brother Danson, and sister Peris, share the duties of coffee production for the family, overseeing commercial operations, farm management and processing, respectively. Like many neighbouring farms, Ndocha is planted primarily with SL varieties, which are renowned for their bright and clean profile. The coffee is processed onsite with careful practices, ensuring that quality is maintained at every stage of production.
