This coffee tastes like brown sugar with soft orange and almond.

Silvio Leite is one of our favourite people working in coffee. We first met him in 2008 and were blown away by his expertise, work ethic and dedication. As an educator, mentor and co-founder of the Cup of Excellence program, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the specialty coffee industry, both in Brazil and internationally.

For many years, Silvio has helped us source beautiful coffees in Brazil, but this is the first year we’ve been able to buy directly from him! He has wanted to establish his own coffee farm for a long time, and in 2019, he finally purchased 30 hectares of land, and hired an all-star team to help him run the farm. This is the second lot of coffee we have had on offer from Silvios’ farm this year.

Always the community-minded educator, Silvio’s ultimate goal is to make his farm “a model and coffee school to showcase how to sustainably produce specialty coffee. He told us, “We are sharing this knowledge with many small producers in the region who may not have the resources to afford external consultation and advice.”

Silvio has enlisted fellow coffee experts Antonio Rigno (centre) and Kleumon Moreira (right) to help him run São Benedito.

Six of the farm’s 30 hectares are now planted with coffee.

Coffees from the Piatã area are considered to be some of the best in Brazil, with cup profiles that tend to be very bright, transparent and distinctive.
