The Santa Clara Scholarship Program was founded by the Zelaya family in 2011 to help support the education of the children of their employees.
At Market Lane, we’ve been partnering with the Zelaya family and offering their beautiful coffees since we opened our doors in 2009. The Zelayas have been growing coffee in Guatemala’s famous Antigua growing region for over 100 years. Today, they own and manage a number of farms, including Santa Clara Estate, which is run by fourth-generation producer, Ricardo Zelaya.
Ricardo is an enthusiastic, dedicated and visionary producer, who cares deeply about the quality of his coffee and the wellbeing of his staff. He has a loyal and dedicated team; many of his employees have worked on the farm and with the family for decades. In total, Santa Clara Estate provides work for 70 year-round permanent employees and an additional 250–350 workers during the harvest who help pick and process the coffee.
Ricardo has always been passionate about finding ways to support his team and, over the years, he’s implemented several social initiatives aimed at raising their standards of living, improving their quality of life, and helping them achieve more job satisfaction.
