When we opened Market Lane 14 years ago, our search for the world’s sweetest, cleanest and most distinctive coffees led us to the doorstep of Epiphanie Mukashyaka, founder of Buf Coffee in Rwanda. Epiphanie is a determined, talented and inspiring entrepreneur who has spent the last quarter-century working tirelessly to build the production of, and international market for, Rwandan specialty coffee. In doing so, she has transformed the lives of thousands of small-scale farmers – many of who are women that, like Epiphanie, lost their husbands and other immediate family members in the Rwandan genocide, and had to rebuild their lives from scratch.

This coffee was grown by independent farmers who live and work in the hills surrounding Buf’s Nyarusiza washing station in Rwanda’s Southern Province. At harvest time, these farmers deliver their ripe coffee cherries to the washing station. The Nyarusiza team then carefully wash-processes the coffee, and dries it over a period of 10–20 days. In the cup, this coffee has the honey sweetness, juicy acidity and dried-fruit finish we look for – and love – in coffees from this lush and rugged part of Rwanda.
